Metamorphopsia most often occurs when changes affect the macula, the central portion of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. When the macula's normally smooth surface becomes swollen, wrinkled, or altered in any way, it can disrupt how light is processed and interpreted by the brain, leading to distorted vision.
Conditions That Can Cause Metamorphopsia

- Macular pucker (epiretinal membrane), where a thin layer of scar tissue forms on the retina

- Central serous chorioretinopathy, in which fluid builds up under the retina
- Retinal tears or detachments, in which the retina pulls away from its normal position
- Inflammatory or infectious conditions affecting the retina
New or worsening visual distortion should never be ignored. While some causes of metamorphopsia develop gradually, others may signal more urgent conditions that require timely treatment.
